Analysis

1) This image may not seem to have much to do with equality at first glance, but in reality it does. The word originated from the word equal, meaning uniform or identical (see etymology page for more information) and this image is simply a representation of that. As I mentioned before in my etymology, this meaning of the word equality is obsolete now. I only included this image to give a visual idea of what equality used to mean back when the word originated.

2) This image sets two people shown to be different as equal, demonstrating equality in race. The image only sets two different people equal rather than all sorts of different people as equal but the message is still clear. It doesn't matter what nationality you are, people are all equal. Furthermore, both figures are gender neutral and though it may not have been the intention it implies that gender doesn't really matter that much. Combined with the equal sign it leads to the conclusion that gender doesn't really matter because both genders are equal.

3) This image is pretty straightforward as well. The scale is balanced, showing that the two on the scales are equal (in case it's hard to tell, both individuals are female).Individuals are always different from each other, each person unique in some way, and yet everyone is equal. That's what equality is about.

4) This image may seem odd. After all, what does a balanced screw have to do with equality? The way I see it, when people are trying to create equality among themselves they have to find the balance so everyone is truly equal. To find and create equality in a society is a balancing act, hence the balanced screw. And balancing a screw would take a lot of work because it has such a small point to balance on. It lies on a fine point, and if that balance is shifted slightly you risk the balance completely and it takes a lot of work to get it to balance perfectly again.

5) This image can be seen in two ways: having equal love and love being equal. Having equal love is about equality in marriage rights, which is currently a big issue and something a lot of people are fighting about and arguing over. People want equal rights in marriage and want same sex marriage while others refuse to allow it. It's currently something that is often thought about and discussed, and any change gets a lot of attention, both good and bad. Love being equal is trickier to explain. It would be that love favors no one, everyone has an equal chance at love, loving someone and being loved.

  2. Your pictures are lovely in this photo gallery site. However, I think your analyses of each picture needs to encompass more, so that we can truly understand the purpose of each picture.

These are some of the questions I had about your pictures that you should consider answering:

    1) How is this picture a representation? Comment on the aspects and details of the photo that specfically relate to your word. Also, what does this imply about the current word, equality, now? Does it mean that we are all exactly the same like those small boxes?

    2) Gender could be one implication, but I think that you should also mention the color of the people and how it relates to equality. Maybe this is talking about race and nationality?

    3) Your analysis is good. However, there are more aspect of the pictures I think you should explain. The positions of the two people are different in the the two pictures. What does that represent? Is that significant? Who is the guy, holding the balance? Is he the one who says that everybody is equal?

    4) the fourth picture is well explained! Just as a side note, is it easy to balance a screw perfectly like that? I don't really know the logistics, but I think it probably is really hard. Maybe its difficulty in achieving that perfect balance can be metaphorical to achieving equality?

    5) There are some background information that could be useful and necessary in understand this picture. Why is marriage equality a big issue right now? What are some marriage equality rights? How is equality in love defined? I know there is a saying that "all is fair in love and war." This saying sort of implies that people should be allowed to do underhand things in the name of love. If it is true, where does equality in love play in?

If you were to answer some of these questions, your photo gallery would be much more clear to us audience!

  3. I mean the pictures are there, but I feel you need to work on your analysis of each picture more so that the reader understands the meaning of the picture.

  4. These pictures are all clipart. You need to expand your range of pictures so that you can express your ideas better. I think that your analysis of each picture is great though, just choice better pictures.

  5. wow, that's a really in depth comment. I'll try my best to answer those questions and expand on my analysis.

I can try to expand my range of images but it's really hard to find good creative commons images that represent equality, and that aren't people carrying signs for equality of some sort (those are not images I want).
