Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this blog is to explore the meaning of Equality. Typically when people think of equality, they think of equal rights, but in this blog I attempted to explore more sides of Equality than just equal rights.  The etymology plays a big part in this blog because I wanted to show what Equality has meant through the past up to now and how people have seen it. How Equality has changed and what equality has been throughout history. I am not arguing anything in this blog, merely exploring and looking at Equality in an attempt to better understand it and allow you, the reader, to understand it better as well.

For my home page, I choose to keep it simple. I wanted to put a little information on the front page, like the dictionary definition and a short little blurb for anyone not from school who comes to check it out, so that people who looked at my page would have some idea of what the rest of my blog would show them. I went with the blue background because it’s simple but decorative, and the blue is a calming color. I choose blue because when I think of equality throughout history there is fighting and protests from people trying to earn their equality in some way and I wanted a calming color to, in a way, offset the protests and help people feel calm. In a way, blue is also an equal color. People may tend to associate blue with males (like pink is often associated with females) but when this gender coloring began, blue was the color for girls.

As I mentioned before, the etymology plays a big part into my blog. I gave the definition I found for it and looked at that, what it started as and what it has come to mean today.

I tried to provide images that represent equality throughout history, equality in rights, in nations, in gender, in size. These images helped demonstrate just what equality is and looked at it in a few different ways. Essentially it elaborates a little bit more on different kinds of Equality.

My found texts tend to focus on one certain aspect of equality (i.e. equality in gender or in race) but despite that they still show an understanding of what Equality is. My non-fiction works show things from an individual’s perspective with their own opinions and thoughts on the issue of equality. My short story, though a children story, does demonstrate what equality is in its simplest form. It has a bias towards teaching equality in terms of gender, but it does show what equality is.

For my creative work, I chose to personify Equality and essentially give life its major changes throughout history. As a baby it meant literally just being equal, the same (mostly thought of as the same size) but then as time went on equality came to mean the same rights rather than the same size. It still holds that meaning, but people think of it more as the same rights. As equality grows up, people fight for it and argue over it and try to win it. I felt that personifying equality in this way would allow the reader a better understanding of how it has changed and what the term means.

  1. Your statement of purpose well informs the readers of the things they will see in this blog. However, I think you need to state your purpose of this blog more clearly. What exact things are you going to imply about equality? What are you arguing or stating about equality. We, as the readers, need a heads up about your overarching theme.

  2. Your statement of purpose should be about the overview of the blog. What is the person going to learn? How are you going to present the information? What are we going to learn about equality? You need to address the theme of your blog. Those are the questions that should be answered in your statement of purpose rather than what we will physically see in the blog.

I really don't know why it showing my name as Unknown. But this is Navdeep.... yeah.

  3. Your statement of purpose gives the reader the idea of the things that they will see. This is awesome. I think you could format this better into sections; you have already done this with the paragraphs, but maybe you could have some subheadings (just a suggestion). I like how you explain your background on here too. Could you however write something about what you are arguing though?

  4. I'm getting the sense that I should make it clear what I'm arguing in this blog so I will try to do that, however, I"m not really arguing anything. I'm more exploring equality throughout history, how it's changed and what it has meant. I will try to make this clearer.
